Symbiosis

Personality is modelled in Transactional Analysis using ego states as its building blocks. There are three types or categories of ego states*. They are:
  • Parent - Borrowed, Learnt, Taught Ego States. They are historical and sourced from one's parents and significant parent figures.
  • Adult - Contemporary Ego States. Ego States of adulthood times.
  • Child - Historical Ego States dating back from one's own childhood and teenage years.
Personality aids in perception, evaluation, assessment and response to reality situations. An ego state in the 'executive' determines the nature of response based on the remaining three factors. A full complement of the three ego states are not available to a growing child. The growing child is dependent on its parents to assess, evaluate and decide what to do. It takes its parents' help for the purpose. This shows up as seeking permission.

  • Mom may I go downstairs to play with my friends. Mom: Yes you may. Make sure you come home by seven.
  • Mom I am feeling . . . .  Oh! quick. Go to the toilet.
  • Mom can I eat this biscuit now. Mom: Yes you may. Throw the paper in the waste basket.
  • Mom I spilt milk. Don't worry I will wipe it.
Parents also use the child's playfulness, creativity, innovation, energy to be happy and joyful.

  • Come let us play catch, catch.
  • Come let us solve the jigsaw puzzle.
  • Bring the car. We both will have fun.
They use and depend on each other for mutual-benefit. This sharing of ego states is called Symbiosis. Symbiosis in childhood and teenage years is a natural phenomenon.

Symbiosis also takes place in newly married couples. Both husband and wife care and share life's problems and difficulties as well as pleasures and joys.

There are many types of symbiosis. They are covered in advanced Transactional Analysis.

Symbiosis is significant because participants discount their ego states.

Notes:

* Ego State: An ego state is an unit of a day's experience that is etched in memory. On the lop side, the experience is such that it definitively minimises and impacts worth, value, esteem, regard and permission to exercise a host of endowments in oneself or another. The experience also reflects one's assessment of situations, problems, difficulties one will be living out in life.  On the bright side it bolster's capacities, capabilities, endowments. It makes the world liveable and life worthwhile.
