Discounting, Passivity and Passive Behaviours

Discounting Passivity and Passive Behaviours 2

We have seen that redefining refers to the mechanism people use to maintain their established view of themselves, other people and the world, in order to advance their scripts.  One set of its manifestations are the four passive behaviours. In passive behaviours we invest energy in areas other than in ending situations and solving problems sanely, safely and effectively. The four passive behaviours are:

  • Doing Nothing
  • Over Adaptation
  • Agitation
  • Incapacitation and Violence
Doing Nothing: My wife returns home from her evening walk in an hour. She informs me if she is going to get late. At times she is late. I call her to know where she is. I may worry or feel anxiety if I do not find out about her safety and well being. However, if I spend energy in worrying and becoming anxious instead of taking action to end my worry or anxiety I am engaging in passive behaviour called doing nothing.

Over Adaptation: Working ladies display this behaviour. They freshen up on coming home and immediately engage themselves in chores in the kitchen or elsewhere. People in the house are happy with them because they consider them to be sincere. They even mention this behaviour to others as an example. This engagement without some rest or break results in they becoming tired and run down. This behaviour is called over adaptation. In over adaptation a person complies with the beliefs instead of checking out with others for alternatives.

Agitation: Agitation is seen in waiting rooms. People sit wagging their legs, or fiddling with some gadget, or starting a something nothing chat with another. The person uses ways to invest energy in some activity instead of being quiet, cool and composed. We also see people playing with a pencil or pen or tapping fingers. Such behaviours express their boredom or unease. It is a passive behaviour called agitation.

Incapacitation: Hurting or harming oneself, banging head, smoking, heavy drinking to the point of passing off are types of incapacitation. Here energy is invested in self harm instead of in solving problems and ending situations. Energy is self directed. Somatic ailments like asthma, diabetes, rashes, migraine  which getting aggravated is also a type of incapacitation.  Depression and suicide are extreme cases of incapacitation. 

Violence: Shouting, abusing, using curse words, aggressiveness, road rage, threatening people are varieties of violence. In extreme cases it shows up as hitting others and physical abuse. Vindictiveness also counts as violence. Homicide is an extreme version of  violence.

@ Discounting is unawarely ignoring aspects of reality that are relevant to ending a situation or solving a problem sanely and safely. Discounting results in some parts of reality receiving prominence and some other parts being overlooked or ignored. This process generates a scripty view of reality.

Discounting occurs in all areas of human activities. In thinking, in feeling, in experiencing, in understanding, in expressing, in appreciating, in loving, in doing, in our actions, in being happy and joyful .
 . . . . the list is endless.
