Discounting - Four Discounts

Discounting takes place in three areas. They are:
  • Self               Concerning Oneself
  • Others           Concerning  Another or Others
  • Situation       Concerning Reality Situations
In each of these there are three types of discounts. They are
  • Stimulus       Discounting the Stimulus
  • Problem        Discounting the Problem*
  • Option          Discounting Generation of and Working out Options
Discounting of the three types of discounts takes place in four modes organised in levels of intensity. They are called four discounts. Here they are mentioned from low to high intensity. They are mentioned in TA literature from high (extreme) to low (mild).

  1. Discounting Personal Ability to choose, select and act;
  2. Discounting Changeability of Approach, Response and solvability;
  3. Discounting Significance;
  4. Discounting Existence;
The types of discounts and modes of discounting are organised in a table form called the Discount Matrix  (I call it the Discounting Matrix). It looks like the one shown her:

The Discounting Matrix is a tool used in treatment. The angular arrows indicate that discounting occurs across angularly rather than linearly. T1 to T5 are the stages of recovery.

Asai and Sakata have developed a new model of Discounting Matrix. The same is put forth below:

It is easier to use for self therapy or self treatment.

I invite you to take up a topic and use it to understand the types and modes of discounting yourself. Take this as an example: having a heavy head in the morning.
