Scripts and their Types -3

This is what Claude Steiner has to say about Script Theory**: Script theory is a decision theory. Script theory is based on the belief that people make conscious life plans in childhood or early adolescence which influence and make predictable the rest of their lives. Persons whose lives are based on such decisions are said to have scripts. Scripts have an onset, a course, and an outcome. . . . . . .  Tragic life scripts such as suicide, drug addiction, schizophrenia, acute depression are reversible because they are generated by script and not a result of disease.

Claude Steiner classifies scripts as being loveless, mindless and joyless. These scripts are generated because of discounting (Click here to know what is Discounting). He asserts that injunctions and attributions both go alongside for scripty behaviour to be enacted. Injunctions are prohibitory messages (Click here for a list of injunctions). Attributions work like curses. They define who or how a person is and what its effects will be on his / her life. (Click here for examples of attributions).

He says that systematic scripting imposed on children comprises basic training.  Scripting affects the capacity to give and receive love; the capacity for awareness in order to understand the world and its people; and the potential for spontaneity in order to experience and express joy and happiness.

Lovelessness is manifest because the affected person is not able to:

  • give strokes when he has them with him to give; absence of capacity to appreciate, praise, thank others are examples.
  • receive or accept strokes that are given by others even if they are good, pleasant and beneficial; inability to accept and receive praise, appreciation and gratitude are examples.
  • ask for strokes even if he wants or deserves them; yearning for love, affection, appreciation, praise but not to take initiative to ask for the same are examples.
  • reject strokes that are painful, hurting or insulting; the person continuing holding onto the pain, hurt, insult, isolation, embarrassment among many other types of unhealthy feelings and emotions are examples.
  • keep away from self stroking; not engaging in bragging, self praise, self love, self acceptance, building self esteem are examples.
these tendencies are called stroke economy.

Mindlessness is manifest by absence of capacity for awareness of a host of things. As examples about events, feelings, emotions, seriousness of issues etc. It is also seen in people not being ready to be with the times. People afflicted with this script are at their wits end to end situations, solve problems, overcome difficulties, face challenges or resolve conflicts. Paranoia and delusion attacks are also manifestations of mindless script activation.

Joylessness is manifest in acts of dislike, hate, resentment, inclination to hurt another or others, violence, sexual abuse, drug-substance-alcohol abuse, sadism, vandalism, terrorism, addictions of sorts and the like. People affected by this script also cannot appreciate beauty, smells, fragrances, flowers. They are accustomed to live in pain and discomfort.

I will be exploring some ways and methods to be free of script afflictions in the next blog.
