Topic Introduction

Psychological Hungers is the first of six topics that are covered in the second part of TA Theory. The others are Life Positions, Discounting and Passivity, Frame of Reference, Injunctions and Drivers, and Script System.

Psychological Hungers are psychological motivators, They urge, drive, push us to think, feel, reason, act and behave in ways that we do.

It is script that structures the flow of events during our lifetime. This leads us to fulfil our script goal. Games represent segments of script. Rackets and transactions are the means by which these are fulfilled. Ego states organise our personality to regulate responses to keep the process going in a given direction.

Psychological Hungers fulfil our many psychological needs. These are set out as advantages for engaging in Games**.  The advantages are:
  • Existential Advantage: They enable reinforcement of one's conclusions about oneself, about others and about one's life entitlements.
  • Biological Advantage: They yield a harvest of strokes.
  • Internal Psychological Advantage: They foster reinforcing script beliefs.
  • External Psychological Advantage: They help in avoiding situations that challenge conclusions about oneself, about others and about quality of life entitlements.
  • Internal Social Advantage: They provide pseudo-intimacy
  • External Social Advantage: They provide reasons to interact with people like by gossiping.
There are six psychological hungers.
  1. Stimulus Hunger: met through the exchange of strokes.
  2. Recognition Hunger: met by engaging in interactions with others.
  3. Structure Hunger: met by structuring time.
  4. Position Hunger: met by reinforcing one's life position.
  5. Incidence Hunger: met by joy, grandiosity, pain, hurt, surprise, embarrassment, and by generating events.
  6. Aspiration Hunger: met by gaining freedom from script-ridden-ness.
People unawarely engage in:
  • thinking, feeling, acting, doing  or
  • in activities or
  • in interacting with people or
  • in recalling past events or
  • in planning for things or
  • in assessing the viability and progress of plans
Such engagements are motivated by psychological hungers. These will be covered in the blogs  that follow.
