Discounting Passivity and Passive Behaviours 1

The definition and description of discounting was covered in the previous blog. To review See note @ below

I have mentioned in a previous blog that all of us are valuable, equally gifted, fit to be recognised, accepted, respected and loved as persons. Our beliefs about ourself, about others and about our endowments and quality of life entitlements limit many endowments in ourselves and in others. The important limiting beliefs affect our:
  • self image
  • capacity for self confidence
  • value, worth, dignity and esteem as persons
  • ability to generate multi-views
  • ability to act or respond
  • capacity to exercise available empowerment
  • capacity to generate age appropriate responses
  • capacity to take initiative to end situations and solve problems
  • capacity to delay gratification of urges, drives and impulses
  • capacity to generate options, and
  • capacity to make sane, safe and effective conclusions, choices and decisions
  • enjoy the right to exist, grow and develop
  • enjoy the right to be me, successful and important
  • enjoy the right to be sane, well and healthy
  • enjoy being accepted, freedom to be close to others and to belong
  • use the capacity to think, feel, experience, express, be happy and be joyful
  • be grown up and also enjoy life like a child
  • be free of compulsive behaviours
  • be free of limiting inhibitions
  • be free to reassess beliefs and conclusions
The limiting beliefs are script beliefs. 'Script belief' generates a discount. Therefore discount is an intra-psychic mechanism activated by a script belief that caps one's capacity and distorts reality*. The activation of discount results in discounting. The effect of discounting results in minimising one aspect and maximising another aspect of oneself or of another or of an endowment, entitlement, or reality situation. The process of discounting triggers activation of script. (Script is that part of frame of reference structured by discounting.) Activated script renders a person script ridden. The person being script ridden shows up in part by expression of passivity and by engaging in passive behaviours. Therefore passivity is the result of discounting and passive behaviours are manifestations of passivity. Passivity is defined as un-assertiveness. It is not doing anything, under-doing, over-doing, not doing enough, doing inappropriately, doing with disregard for safety and security, care and comfort, not up holding worth, value, respect, dignity, esteem . . . . . etcetra

An example:

My script belief - I am treated unfairly.

Script Manifestation - Aggression, blaming, justifying, roles of persecutor and rescuer among many other.

Passivity shows up in over-doing, being insensitive, disregard for safety of self and of others, not giving importance to comfort, in ability to appreciate others, inability to express love and affection, presenting self as authority figure, perceived as engaging in put-downs, welling up of anger and dislike, inability to forgive.

Discounting: Not allowing others to talk, rescuing thereby depriving others of initiative and assuming responsibility, helping out others though not called for, perceiving every matter as a problem, over-engaging in resolving issues, over detailing, generalising, expressing threat and aggression, insensitive to feelings of others, not enjoying life and many more.

Passive behaviours: over-adaptation, agitation, incapacitation and violence.

The next blog will cover Passive Behaviours.

Notes:

@ Discounting is unawarely ignoring aspects of reality that are relevant to ending a situation or solving a problem sanely and safely. Discounting results in some parts of reality receiving prominence and some other parts being overlooked or ignored. This process generates a scripty view of reality.

Discounting occurs in all areas of human activities. In thinking, in feeling, in experiencing, in understanding, in expressing, in appreciating, in loving, in doing, in our actions, in being happy and joyful .
 . . . . the list is endless.

*Reality: A person, animal or thing; An event, situation, condition, difficulty, problem or conflict; A mind state; Thinking, feeling, emotions, sensations in the body; In fact any and every thing in the universe that affects us or has a capacity to affect us. Awareness generates knowing.
